We are grateful to P. Beuachat, Klostermuseum Muri/Aargau for pointing us in the direction of Wüst (information given over the phone, July 2010) and to Prof Helmut Börsch-Supan, Berlin, who has also identified the painting as the work of J. H. Wüst. Amongst the best known works by Wüst is the ‘Rhone glacier’ of 1793 in the Kunsthaus, Zurich. Typical traits of the artist are featured in our painting: the balanced composition, the haptic representation of the rock formation and the convincing light patterns.
